Venice is treasure of western culture and civilization, particularly the Renaissance. Yet it has been impacted by climate change and lunar tides, resulting in the phenomenon of Acqua Alta. The city is very vulnerable to changes in sea level, as it is built on low islands in the Venetian Lagoon which have existed since the end of the last Ice Age. In 2019 the city experience the second highest Acqua Alta in history, flooding the city, destroying infrastructure, cultural objects and homes, as well as uprooting trees and disrupting life for all during a month of recurring floods.
Since the Acqua Alta has been slowly drowning a city and a culture, it appears appropriate to show the flood waters with gondolas in the storm that appear to be sinking during the high water.
